P–L

Studio Overview
Public-Library is a cross-disciplinary design studio in Los Angeles, founded in 2011 by Ramón Coronado and Marshall Rake. We construct identities, concepts, visuals and experiences that express the core beliefs of brands we believe in.

Our work is a balancing act. We practice the art of reduction using fundamental typographic theory— while experimenting with space and form. We value transparency and honesty in collaboration to pave the way for meaningful design solutions. Our aim is to simplify, clarify and strengthen brand communications for our partners.

Marshall Rake
Co-Founder/Creative Director

Marshall was raised in Kansas and has migrated between the east and west coasts. He was awarded a Certificate of Typographic Excellence by the Type Directors Club in 2009, and received his BFA in Graphic Design from Art Center. Marshall also teaches as an adjunct professor in branding.

With a focus on viewing brand and design as storytelling, Marshall’s work aims to build visual connections through dissimilar components. He has worked with Mother New York, 2x4, 180 and Myspace among others. He has contributed on campaigns and brand development for brands Marc Jacobs, Urban Outfitters, and Nasty Gal.

Marshall has collaborated with the Hammer Museum, New Museum, and Studio Museum on interactive design and product development. He has contributed art direction for directors David Fincher and Ryan McGinley, and has exhibited work in Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles and the Netherlands.

Ramón Coronado
Co-Founder/Creative Director

Ramón was born in Mexico and received his BFA from Art Center in 2009. He studied in Switzerland under mentor Wolfgang Weingart—an internationally lauded designer and typographer accredited for developing New Wave and Swiss Punk typography.

Ramón uses typography in his work as an experimentation point through print, digital and physical spaces. Before founding Public-Library, he worked at Wieden+Kennedy, Myspace, and 72andSunny among others—refreshing brands such as Levi’s, Coca-Cola, Old Spice and K-SWISS through typography and art direction on large scale international campaigns and cross-platform media applications.

Ramón is published by Good Magazine, Juxtapose, Gestalten, Beautiful Decay Magazine and Fast Company. He has exhibited in Shanghai, Washington D.C., Los Angeles and New York.
